How eG Enterprise Complements
Citrix EdgeSight

EdgeSight from Citrix is a user experience monitoring solution for XenApp and XenDesktop infrastructures. eG Enterprise, a Citrix Ready certified monitoring solution from eG Innovations, complements Citrix EdgeSight. Here is how.

EdgeSight focuses on the communication channel from the user terminal/desktop to the XenApp and XenDesktop servers. While the communication channel to the XenApp and XenDesktop servers plays an important role in the end-user experience, the overall user experience can also be impacted by the performance of the other infrastructure tiers supporting the Citrix service. For instance, if the virtualization platform hosting the XenApp or XenDesktop servers is slow, or if the enterprise application being accessed by the user is slow, the user experience would suffer. By monitoring every layer of every tier of the Citrix infrastructure and by automatically correlating performance across the infrastructure tiers, eG Enterprise help administrators understand where the bottlenecks are in their infrastructure. Proactive problem detection, rapid problem isolation, and in-depth diagnosis can result in reduced service downtime and improved user experience.

  EdgeSight eG Enterprise Primary Differences
XenApp EdgeSight monitors XenApp and user desktops and terminals; Its focus is on proving whether Citrix XenApp is causing performance issues or not. eG Enterprise monitors XenApp servers as well as the end-to-end infrastructure supporting XenApp services including Microsoft products (AD, SQL, etc.), enterprise applications (SAP, Siebel, etc.), the network and storage components, and the virtualization platform (vSphere, XenServer, etc.) that may be hosting the XenApp servers. EdgeSight focuses on monitoring the end-user experience for XenApp deployments. Its metrics help prove if Citrix XenApp is or is not the cause of a problem. It is a deep-dive technology for XenApp servers.

eG Enterprise is an end-to-end service monitoring, diagnosis and reporting solution for XenApp-based services. It focuses on proving where the real problem is - i.e., network? XenApp? web? application? VM?
XenServer EdgeSight does not monitor XenServer. eG Enterprise monitors the physical server and all of the VMs hosted on the XenServer. eG Enterprise is a comprehensive monitoring, diagnosis, and reporting solution for XenServer deployments. It offers monitoring for every layer of every tier of the infrastructure. eG Enterprise's ability to monitor VMs both from the outside and from the inside provides a one-of-a-kind 360 degree view of a VM.
XenDesktop EdgeSight can be installed on each of the virtual desktops to monitor the user experience for VDI services. EdgeSight does not monitor the Desktop Delivery Controller (connection broker), terminal servers, network, storage, the virtualization platform (vSphere or XenServer) or other components of the end-to-end virtual desktop infrastructure. eG Enterprise is an end-to-end monitoring, diagnosis, and reporting solution for VDI. This solution monitors every layer of every tier of the virtual desktop infrastructure, including the network, connection broker, terminals, virtualization platforms, virtual desktops, storage, etc. Using service topology maps that show the inter-dependencies between VDI tiers, eG Enterprise correlates performance across tiers and pin-points where the bottlenecks in the VDI infrastructure lie. Its ability to monitor and report on user sessions (not just on VMs), the capability to correlate performance across infrastructure tiers, and the ability to offer deep dive views into each virtual desktop without installing agents on the desktops are key differentiators of the eG Enterprise solution. Whereas EdgeSight focuses on the user experience, by monitoring the virtual desktops, eG Enterprise focuses on providing a comprehensive end-to-end view of the virtual desktop infrastructure. Using eG Enterprise, administrators can get a single pane of glass view of the entire virtual desktop infrastructure end-to-end including the web frontend, terminal servers, broker, virtualization platform and storage. With eG Enterprise, administrators can pin-point where the bottlenecks are, plan capacity to accommodate their virtual desktop rollouts, and determine how to optimize the usage of their infrastructure.
