This guide summarizes many of the commonly used terms in the eG product documentation. Use this to understand the usage of the eG products.

Authentication Technique by which access to Internet or intranet resources requires the user to enter a username and password as identification.
Agent An eG software component that executes on a server and tracks the health of the server and all the applications executing on the server
Alarm An event generated by the eG software, indicating a specific problem in the IT infrastructure
Application Software executing on a server providing a specific service (e.g., web server, web application server, database server, DNS server, etc)
Bandwidth Rate of transfer of data to, from, or via an Internet server, router, or equivalent device
Browser A program used to locate and view HTML documents (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, for example.)
Correlation The act of analyzing various metrics and identifying the root-cause of problems
Domain Name The host name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet
Domain Name Service The process that converts an IP address into a host name.
External agent An agent executing on a server and performing black-box tests of the target environment (e.g., connecting to a web server, downloading a page, and measuring the server's availability and response)
FTP File Transfer Protocol is a standard method of exchanging files between computers over the Internet.
Host The hardware used to support applications and offer services
HTML Hyper Text Markup Language is used to write documents for the World Wide Web to specify hypertext links between related objects and documents.
HTTP Hyper Text Transfer Protocol is a standard method of transferring data between a web server and a web browser.
IP Address Internet Protocol address that denotes the identity of a computer connected to the Internet.
Internal agent An agent that executes on an IT infrastructure server that supports an application
Manager eG software component that receives status information from all the agents and produces a comprehensive view of the health of the IT infrastructure that it monitors
Measurement A metric that reflects a specific characteristic of an application, service, device, etc. E.g., the response time of a web server is a measurement
Personalized view A restricted view of the target environment that is customized to a specific user
Platform The operating system (i.e. Windows NT, Solaris, etc.) of the server
Protocol An established method of exchanging data over the Internet.
SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol - the protocol used for collecting statistics from network devices such as routers, hubs, switches, etc.

Test The process used to verify the health of a specific application or device (e.g., a Process test tracks the health of all processes executing on a server)
Topology Interconnection and/or interdependencies between components of an application or between network devices
Web adapter A component of an eG agent that plugs into popular web servers and allows real-time monitoring of web servers, sites, and transactions
Web server The application that supports user accesses over the web

Web site

A specific application to which users connect to view web pages
