eG Innovations Delivers Comprehensive Monitoring
for VMware® Environments
The eG Monitor for VMware® InfrastructuresTM, with patent-pending technology,
manages
all aspects of virtual hosts, guests and desktops
ISELIN, N.J.; Sept 10, 2007 - eG Innovations, a global provider of business service monitoring and triage solutions for IT infrastructures, today announced its first product specifically designed for use in virtualized computing environments. The eG Monitor for VMware® InfrastructuresTM (eG VM MonitorTM) is a comprehensive solution for monitoring and managing all aspects of virtual hosts and guests, whether the infrastructure is used to support server or desktop applications. The product includes patent-pending technology, and is part of the company's flagship eG Enterprise SuiteTM.
The eG VM MonitorTM is the only virtual management tool providing real time “external” and “internal” performance views of what a VMware host sees about the guests and what the guests see internally. Using patent-pending In-N-Out MonitoringTM technology, the eG VM Monitor provides a comprehensive view of the VMware ESX ServerTM, including performance of the VM kernel, console operating system and all of its individual guests. eG agents only need be installed on the ESX Servers – not on each guest. Using ESX Server APIs, the eG agents provide an “outside view” of a guest's performance. Relative resource usage levels of guests show where performance hogs may lie. To complement the outside view, the eG agent obtains an “inside view” that details user activity (desktop/VDI), resource allocation and the application mix running inside the guest system.
“All metrics collected by the agents are baselined automatically by the eG VM Monitor, so that IT administrators can be informed proactively of any deviations from the norm,“ said Srinivas Ramanathan, president and CEO of eG Innovations. “Coupled with the ability of our eG Enterprise Suite to monitor more than 80 applications, including Citrix, Oracle, IBM, SAP and more, the eG Monitor for VMware Infrastructures provides a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for monitoring and managing the performance of virtual environments.”
From a monitoring and management standpoint, the eG VMware Monitor goes well beyond managing virtualized servers as discrete entities. End-to-end business service views show the applications and network devices that support each business service, and the inter-dependencies among them. In turn, applications are mapped to the virtual machines they run on. Since virtual topologies by nature are no longer static, it is critical from a root-cause diagnosis and correlation perspective that a monitoring solution be adaptive.
The eG VM Monitor is compatible with VMware® VMotionTM and Live Migration technology in that it is able to track and report why, for example, a guest was moved, where it is hosted now and whether it continues to move for reasons such as excessive disk activity, excessive memory usage, etc. To support VMware® VMotionTM Live Migration technology, the eG VM Monitor determines the dependency of the virtual machines to physical machines dynamically. A patented root-cause diagnostic engine analyzes the service topology graphs and virtual-to-physical machine mappings to pin-point where problem areas in the infrastructure lie.
Availability and Pricing
The eG Monitor for VMware Infrastructures is available immediately. Pricing is per ESX server monitored, regardless of the hardware capabilities (CPU, memory) of the ESX server, or the number of virtual guests or the virtual desktops it supports. Pricing for a 25 node VMware-based environment is around $50,000. The company is demonstrating the eG VMware Monitor at booth #1123 at VMworld 2007, Sept. 11-13 in San Francisco .
