The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/ebooks\/application-performance-monitoring-survey\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eG Innovations &amp; DevOps Institute APM survey<\/a> indicates that 88% of organizations are using at least one form of cloud technology. Organizations move to the cloud for agility \u2013 they can deploy and have applications running in the cloud in minutes. Cloud computing also offers options for high availability, automated backups, and such.<\/p>\n<p>When applications are migrated to the cloud, it isn\u2019t the cloud service provider\u2019s (CSP\u2019s) responsibility to monitor the application service and the cloud provider&#8217;s built-in monitoring tools are unlikely to be sufficient. In our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/white-paper\/top-6-myths-of-cloud-performance-monitoring\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new eBook,<\/a> we\u2019ve covered the limitations of CSP SLAs and native monitoring tooling that will help you understand the gaps and what you need to do to proactively monitor and troubleshoot application uptime and services.<\/p>\n<h3>What Cloud Service Provider SLAs Actually Offer (and Don\u2019t!)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Let&#8217;s take a quick look at the service levels that the popular cloud providers offer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20877\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/cloud-application-monitoring-sla.jpg\" alt=\"Cloud application monitoring SLA image\" width=\"350\" height=\"250\" border=\"0\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/cloud-application-monitoring-sla.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/cloud-application-monitoring-sla-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/cloud-application-monitoring-sla-310x221.jpg 310w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/cloud-application-monitoring-sla-140x100.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px; text-align: left;\">Amazon&#8217;s Compute Service Level Agreement is available <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/compute\/sla\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. Note that Amazon&#8217;s SLA commitment is around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/server-uptime-monitoring\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Uptime&#8221;.<\/a> Uptime is computed as the time when the instance does not have external connectivity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">The focus of the SLA is on the connectivity of the compute instance, not about your application. Also, the SLA focuses on availability, not on performance &#8211; i.e., even for connectivity, there is no response time guarantee. At the end of the day, you\/your IT admin is still responsible for any application issues. Note also that what you get in return for an SLA violation is a service credit. This may not compensate for the loss of goodwill or revenue loss that you may suffer in the event of an incident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">The SLA guarantees for a managed service like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/supported-technologies\/aws-monitoring\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AWS RDS<\/a> is no different. See the AWS RDS SLA <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/rds\/sla\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. Again, SLA commitment is based on Uptime, which means all connection requests to an RDS instance must have failed. As in the case of compute instances, Amazon only guarantees instance availability, not performance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Microsoft Azure&#8217;s SLAs are available <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-in\/support\/legal\/sla\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. For compute instances, SLAs are defined based on &#8220;Connectivity&#8221;, which is very similar to how AWS defines their SLA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">The situation with Azure&#8217;s database-as-a-service option is similar.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Citrix offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/supported-technologies\/citrix-monitoring\/citrix-cloud\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Citrix cloud service,<\/a> where you can host the control plane of your Citrix deployment in their cloud. Citrix&#8217;s SLA for their cloud service is available <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.citrix.com\/en-us\/citrix-cloud\/overview\/service-level-agreement.html\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here. <\/a>As with the other cloud providers, the SLA is based on the percentage of time in a month that users can access their applications.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another unsaid aspect of SLAs is that they are measured by the service provider, using their tools and mechanisms.<\/p>\n<h3>Debunk the Top Myths of Cloud Performance Monitoring<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/white-paper\/top-6-myths-of-cloud-performance-monitoring\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20878 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/6-myths-cloud-performance-monitoring.jpg?new\" alt=\"6 myths of cloud performance monitoring\" width=\"210\" height=\"290\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>By now, you&#8217;ve probably understood that just moving to the cloud doesn&#8217;t mean that the performance of your applications is guaranteed.
