{"id":32354,"date":"2023-08-11T06:00:44","date_gmt":"2023-08-11T10:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/?p=32354"},"modified":"2025-03-18T06:23:05","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T10:23:05","slug":"fixing-citrix-issues-with-eg-enterprises-automation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/fixing-citrix-issues-with-eg-enterprises-automation\/","title":{"rendered":"Fixing Citrix Issues with eG Enterprise&#8217;s Automation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"inner_content\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Without any ability to self-heal, fixing Citrix usually requires manual intervention to remediate problems. This leads to time spent on mundane tasks managing the care and feeding of Citrix. Automation of these tasks for fixing Citrix provides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No more manual intervention<\/li>\n<li>Fast issue resolution<\/li>\n<li>A fix before users become aware of problems<\/li>\n<li>Business continuity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In our latest release, eG Enterprise v7.2, we have added new auto-correction and auto-remediation capabilities for Citrix administrators that remove the need for scripting. There are a few issues that can be a cause of constant frustration for admins. Specifically, unregistered VDAs, full disk drives, lingering sessions, and high memory usage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Inside the eG Enterprise console, an admin can simply configure auto-correction of these issues by enabling or disabling the following functions to turn on\/off automation:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Restoring Unregistered Citrix VDAs<\/li>\n<li>Resolving High Disk Space Usage Issues<\/li>\n<li>Automated Actions for Memory Usage<\/li>\n<li>Optimizing Resources from Idle and Disconnected Sessions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In future versions, we intend to add additional auto-correction actions via similar GUI interfaces with no need to write any scripts. These auto-correction activities are automatically audited and tracked so administrators are aware correction has occurred and so that they can retrospectively analyze auto-corrected workflows.<\/p>\n<h2>Auto-Fix 1: Restoring Unregistered Citrix VDAs<\/h2>\n<p>A very common reason as to why a user is unable to launch their published applications is because the Virtual App server is in an &#8220;Unregistered&#8221; state.<\/p>\n<p>When a VDA is in an Unregistered state, it stops communicating with the Citrix Delivery Controllers. New sessions cannot be allocated to it. Users become frustrated and admins scramble to fix the problem.<\/p>\n<p>eG can monitor the Registration state by using a performance test called Citrix Server Information. This test checks on the status of the server and provides answers to questions around the VDA like \u201cIs it a virtual machine?\u201d, or \u201cDoes it have a valid license?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Citrix-Server-Info-view.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Citrix-Server-Info.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"377\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Citrix-Server-Info.webp 750w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Citrix-Server-Info-300x151.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Citrix-Server-Info-310x156.webp 310w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Citrix-Server-Info-140x70.webp 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_caption\">Figure 1: In eG Enterprise v7.2, the Citrix Server Information test provides essential answers for Citrix admins.<\/div>\n<p>One of the new eG Enterprise automatic corrective actions can be used to check the VDA registration state and if it is unregistered during its test interval time (say, 5 minutes or so), it will initiate an automated action to either restart Citrix services or restart the server.<\/p>\n<p>The configuration of this is easy: simply navigate to Tests \u2013&gt; Specific Configuration, select the Virtual App server, and set the buttons to \u2018Yes\u2019. By default, these are set to \u2018No\u2019. If both the \u2018Restart Citrix Services\u2019 and \u2018Restart Machine\u2019 are set, then the eG agent will first attempt to restart two of the crucial Citrix services and if that doesn\u2019t fix it, then a server restart will occur.<\/p>\n<p>If you have multiple servers, then apply the configuration to all the others and let the magic begin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/eG-corrective-action.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"384\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/eG-corrective-action.webp 700w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/eG-corrective-action-300x165.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/eG-corrective-action-310x170.webp 310w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/eG-corrective-action-140x77.webp 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_caption\">Figure 2: When you change the settings to \u201cYes\u201d, eG\u2019s corrective action will take care of the manual work that an admin usually does to get the server registered with the Delivery Controller.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding: 20px; border: 1px solid #ffd392; background: #fcf8ef; margin-bottom: 30px;\"><em>Note: This capability is currently only supported for Citrix Virtual App servers on Windows. Support for VDI is road-mapped for future versions.<\/em><\/div>\n<h2>Auto-Fix 2: Resolving High Disk Space Usage Issues in Citrix Environments<\/h2>\n<p>Disk space management is very important for file servers, profile servers, exchange servers, virtual app servers, and so on. Low or no disk space can degrade performance, resulting in a poor end user experience.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the temporary files that your system creates are automatically deleted or purged, but others can accumulate. When temporary files accumulate, the server quickly runs out of disk space and may even bring the machine to a halt. Windows OS update failures can also result in large files filling up space.<\/p>\n<p>Another new automation action in eG Agent can delete unwanted files from specific locations. This is supported on both Windows and Linux OSs.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to the registration setting above, eG monitors and alerts on disk space, but if the admin can\u2019t get to it in time, or is on a much-needed holiday, then you can change a setting in the &#8220;Admin&#8221; tab of the main console under Tests \u2013&gt; Specific Configuration.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/registration-settings.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"221\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/registration-settings.webp 670w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/registration-settings-300x99.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/registration-settings-310x102.webp 310w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/registration-settings-140x46.webp 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_caption\">Figure 3: Enabling automated actions in eG Enterprise<\/div>\n<p>Once you have selected \u2018Yes\u2019, click on the green plus sign to set up the rule. If you select the C drive, then a list of recommended file folders will automatically show up to help the administrator. You can at this point remove entries or add more files or folders to the list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/automation-cleanup-rules-view.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/automation-cleanup-rules.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/automation-cleanup-rules.webp 750w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/automation-cleanup-rules-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/automation-cleanup-rules-310x175.webp 310w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/automation-cleanup-rules-140x79.webp 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_caption\">Figure 4: Configuring the files and directories you wish to clean-up automatically.<\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Some key facts about the automation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Multiple drives can be configured.<\/li>\n<li>For each drive, indicate when the action must be triggered (at what disk utilization level).<\/li>\n<li>For the OS drive, the default configuration cleans up the Adobe setup files, Windows defender definition updates, Windows defender scans, downloaded program files, etc.<\/li>\n<li>You can specify additional files and folders to be cleaned, using \u2018;\u2019 as a separator.<\/li>\n<li>For other drives, you could specify the absolute path of the files and folders to be cleaned once the drive utilization limit is reached.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Auto-fix 3: Automation of Actions for Fixing Memory Usage in Citrix Environments<\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Let\u2019s start with a quick overview of Windows OS Memory usage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Modified memory is memory that was allocated by an application then removed from the application&#8217;s working set, usually because it hasn&#8217;t been used for a long time.<\/li>\n<li>Standby memory contains pages that have been removed from process working sets but are still linked to their respective working sets. The Standby list is essentially a cache. Standby memory is supposed to be released when memory is required, but this doesn\u2019t always happen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Automatic memory optimization in eG Enterprise allows modified and standby memory to be cleared\/released so that applications get access to the memory they need, especially when a system is running low on memory.<\/p>\n<p>Again, setting this up is as simple as going to the Agent Specific Configuration, selecting the Memory Usage test and changing the check buttons to \u2018Yes\u2019 for Automated Action Enabled and the other items shown in the image below (Figure 5). You can select which method of monitoring memory you prefer: by the amount of free memory remaining, or by the percent of memory utilized. This way, the admin knows what has happened and when on each server.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/memory-usages-monitor-view.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/memory-usages-monitor.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"748\" height=\"486\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32562\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_caption\">Figure 6: Automated memory optimization is transparent and visible to the administrator unlike silent scripts. Allowing administrators to retrospectively investigate when frequent remediation is occurring.<\/div>\n<p>If enabled, eG Enterprise will track the resultant automation incidents as shown in Figure 7.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/output-automative-corrective.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/output-automative-corrective.webp 750w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/output-automative-corrective-300x63.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/output-automative-corrective-310x65.webp 310w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/output-automative-corrective-140x29.webp 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_caption\">Figure 7: The administrator will always be able to trace that automatic corrective actions have occurred.<\/div>\n<h2>Auto-Fix 4: Automatic Action on Sessions \u2013 Optimizing Resources from Idle and Disconnected Sessions<\/h2>\n<p>Both Idle and Disconnected Sessions in Citrix environments can waste precious system resources. eG Enterprise now includes automated actions out-of-the-box that can be used to tidy up sessions in these states.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">To clarify:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Idle session:<\/strong> A session where the user does not supply any input for a period of time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disconnected session:<\/strong> A session where the user has left the session running but is not actively using it (typically by clicking on the \u201cDisconnect\u201d button in Workspace App or by closing the Workspace App without signing out). Session processes continue running on the Citrix server\/desktop even after a user is disconnected. This can result in a waste of resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\"><em style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Actions on Idle Sessions: 1. Change Process Priority<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Each process on Windows has a priority based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/top-ways-to-change-priority-level-for-programs-on-windows-10-and-windows-11\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6 levels:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Realtime<\/li>\n<li>High<\/li>\n<li>Above normal<\/li>\n<li>Normal<\/li>\n<li>Below normal<\/li>\n<li>Low<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tasks with a higher priority are given preference to the allocation of system resources like CPU time and memory, allowing them to run faster.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-allocation-view.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-allocation.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-allocation.webp 750w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-allocation-300x182.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-allocation-310x188.webp 310w, https:\/\/www.eginnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-allocation-140x85.webp 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_caption\">Figure 8: Processes on a Windows OS have an associated priority.<\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">How the eG Agent action on Idle Sessions work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When a session is idle, the priority of its processes is changed to below normal.<\/li>\n<li>When the user starts interacting again (session is no longer idle), the eG agent automatically reassigns the session\u2019s processes to normal priority.<\/li>\n<li>Dynamic re-assignment of priorities helps active sessions have access to more resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\"><em style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Actions on Idle Sessions: 2. Trim Memory of Processes<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Memory trimming is performed through the OS, where some of the allocated memory of a process from RAM is moved to page files. This makes RAM available for other applications.<\/p>\n<p>Idle sessions have running processes. By trimming the memory of processes belonging to idle sessions forcibly, active sessions\/process will get more access to RAM, and in turn, faster application response times.<\/p>\n<p>The TRIM-TO-MEMORY setting sets the min limit below which trimming will not occur. Default limit is set to 10MB. Memory will be reclaimed automatically when the process becomes active in the user session.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\"><em style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Actions on Disconnected Sessions: 3. Log off sessions<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">How the eG Agent action on Disconnected Sessions works:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once a session is disconnected, wait a period of time, then logoff this session.<\/li>\n<li>Logging off the session terminates processes executed in the session.<\/li>\n<li>Resources now become available for active sessions on the server\/desktop, avoiding unnecessary resource consumption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To get started with these three actions, change the configuration for the test \u2018Citrix Sessions\u2019 and select \u2018Yes\u2019 to Automated Action Enabled.
