The old EDI (electronic data interchange) of the past has been replaced with an explosion of new services[i]<\/a> that interoperate as value networks.<\/p>\n Therefore, words like \u201cecosystem\u201d make sense. But whether you prefer the term \u201capplication ecosystem\u201d or \u201cIT service\u201d doesn\u2019t really matter \u2013 many service management concepts still apply. In fact, they\u2019re more critical than ever.<\/p>\n IT services and\/or application ecosystems underpin business services, which are the means of delivering value to customers. IT services are heterogeneous<\/em> \u00ad\u2013 that is, they span a very wide range of technologies, architectures and deployment models:<\/p>\n It\u2019s also important to note that in most organizations today, the portfolio of IT services and\/or application ecosystems is diverse. Systems of record may be built around legacy hardware and software, leveraging in-house data centers \u2013 these might be considered \u201cback-end\u201d systems. Systems of engagement might involve web sites, portals, mobile and cloud services \u2013 these might be called \u201cfront-ends.\u201d<\/p>\n Supporting IT services can also span across systems of engagement, systems of record, plus systems of differentiation \u2013 further complicating the service management environment.<\/p>\n What\u2019s important is that the end-to-end business service, as experienced by the customer, is supported by many<\/em> IT services. The traditional approach to monitoring has focused on relying upon specialized monitors for each technology domain: Oracle monitoring<\/a>, web server monitoring<\/a>, database monitoring<\/a>, cloud monitoring<\/a>, infrastructure monitoring<\/a>, application monitoring<\/a> and so on.<\/p>\n The single pane of glass vision for unified monitoring<\/a> is based on the ability to monitor where you are today<\/em>. Your current production services are the only place where value is being delivered to customers, so unless you\u2019re in a greenfield environment you will need to start back at the beginning, but leveraging your existing IT services.<\/p>\n In addition, modernizing applications for migration to the cloud or to leverage emerging technologies such as containers and microservices will require a detailed understanding of how your current IT services work. It\u2019s what moves us away from diagnosis-related activities, and toward collaborating on how to establish self-healing properties once an issue is identified.
