Monitoring the VMware Horizon Identity Manager

eG Enterprise offers a specialized monitoring model to monitor the VMware Horizon Identity Manager which periodically checks the availability of the VMware Identity Manager over the web, desktop/application launch failures, failures such as directory sync failures, login failures etc, the network connectivity of the VMware Identity Manager from an external location and the traffic transmitted and received by the VMware Identity Manager through the network interfaces.

Figure 1 : The layer model of the VMware Horizon Identity Manager

Each layer of Figure 1 is mapped to a variety of tests that provide valuable insights into the overall performance of the VMware Horizon Identity Manager. Using the metrics reported by the tests, administrators can find accurate answers for the following performance queries:

  • How many users, applications and devices are connected to the target VMware Horizon Identity Manager?
  • How many groups were set up in the target VMware Horizon Identity Manager?
  • How many applications / desktops failed to launch from the target VMware Horizon Identity Manager? Which applications /desktops failed to launch frequently and which user attempted launching those applications / desktops?
  • How many user login failures were noticed in the event logs?
  • How many Directory Sync failures were noticed in the event logs?
  • Which type of failures were frequently logged in the event logs - is it password lockouts? or password reset failures? or TLS connection failures? If so, how many such failures were noticed?
  • What is the overall status of the VMware Horizon Identity Manager service?
  • Are the services of the integrated components of the VMware Horizon Identity Manager functioning with the status "OK"?
  • Is the database connection between the database and the target VMware Horizon Identity Manager successful?
  • What is the current status of each configured resource?
  • How many users are entitled to access each configured resource?
  • How many times each resource failed to launch? Which resource failed to launch more frequently?
  • What is the type of license assigned to each configured resource? is it single? or floating? or unspecified?

The Operating System, TCP and Application Processes layers mapped to the VMware Horizon Identity Manager have already been dealt with the Monitoring Unix and Windows Servers document. The Network layer mapped to the VMware Horizon Identity Manager has already been dealt with the Monitoring Cisco Routers document. Let us now discuss the Identity Manager layer in detail.
