eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance

What is the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance?
The eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance is a software bundle that includes the eG Enterprise Manager, the Java Development Kit, an Oracle Express database, and an eG Agent. It is provided as an OVF file and is fully tested to work on a VMware vSphere/ESX virtualization platform
What do I get once the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance is installed?
The eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance, when installed on a VMware vSphere/ESX server, creates a new virtual machine called the eG Enterprise Suite on that server, with the following specifications:
  • Operating System: CentOS (Community Enterprise Operating System) v 5.2
  • VMware Tools installed : Yes
  • Allocated Memory (RAM): 1GB
  • Allocated Disk Size: 10GB
  • Virtual CPU: 1
  • Applications Installed: The eG Enterprise Suite comprising of an eG manager and agent, Oracle Express Database 10g
  • Storage Capacity of the bundled Database Server: 4 GB
  • Double-byte Support for the bundled eG Enterprise: No
Why would I want to use the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance?
Typically, to install the eG Enterprise Suite, you first need a Microsoft Windows, Linux, or Solaris system to host the eG manager. You need to have the Java Development Kit installed on this system. You also need to install or have installed an Oracle or a Microsoft SQL database server. The eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance contains a Linux-based OS, Oracle database, and the JDK pre-installed. So if you are using VMware vSphere/ESX virtualization, by just importing the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance, you could have the eG Enterprise Suite up and running in just a few minutes.
How is the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance licensed?
There is no additional license fee or time limit for the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance. However, a separate license key is needed to activate the eG Manager. eG's policies on evaluation licenses and standard licenses, based on the number of eG agents, still apply.
What virtualization platform does the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance run on?
Currently, the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance has only been tested to work with VMware vSphere.
Do I need to install the eG Manager once I have the virtual appliance up and running?
The eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance already includes an installation of the eG manager. By default, the eG manager uses the Oracle Express database that is installed in the same virtual appliance.
What are the limitations of the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance?
The main limitation of the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance is a database size limit of 4 GB, when using the built-in Oracle Express database server. It is therefore advisable that this configuration be limited to applications where up to 10 servers need to be monitored.
Can the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance be used in conjunction with an external database to overcome the 4 GB storage limit of Oracle Express?
Yes. If you want to use the eG Manager Appliance for monitoring a large number of components or to store the collected metrics for a longer time period (multiple weeks or months), the storage requirements also increase proportionally. In such a case, it would be best to configure the eG Manager (installed on the appliance) to use an external database server with a larger storage capacity. The procedure for this is included in the product documentation.
Does the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance expire after a time period?
The eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance does not expire. However, you need to install a license key for the eG manager to function. This license key will be time-limited in case you are evaluating the product, or if you are using the eG Enterprise Suite on a pay-per-use basis.
Can the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance be used to manage an infrastructure with physical servers also?
Yes, you can use the eG Manager installed on the virtual appliance to manage physical servers as well.
Can I use the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance in a production environment?
Yes. The eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance is just a VM with the appropriate software pre-configured to host the eG manager. You can use this in production but will need to make sure that the configured CPU and memory requirements match the sizing guidelines for the eG manager. You also have to take into account the database sizing requirements for the infrastructure being monitored.
My environment comprises of multiple ESX servers and a vCenter server. Do I need to deploy the appliance directly on one of the ESX servers or can I perform the installation via the vCenter server instead?
You can deploy the appliance either way. The only difference however is, while installing via vCenter, you will have to explicitly indicate the datacenter, cluster, and then the ESX server within the cluster on which the appliance is to be deployed.
Where do I download the eG Enterprise Virtual Appliance from?
