Monitoring Oracle ZFS Storage System

eG Enterprise offers a special-purpose monitoring model to monitor the status and overall performance of the target Oracle ZFS Storage system.

Figure 1 depicts the layer model of an Oracle ZFS Storage system.

Figure 1 : Layer model for Oracle ZFS Storage

Every layer in the Figure 1 is mapped to various tests to determine the critical statistics related to the performance of the target Oracle ZFS Storage system. Using the metrics reported by the tests, administrators can find accurate answers for the following performance queries:

  • Were many unconfigured cluster nodes noticed on the Oracle ZFS Storage System?

  • Is Fibre channel utilizing excessive bandwidth in the target Oracle ZFS Storage System?

  • Is the level of traffic on each physical disk of the target storage system high?

  • Were services available under target Oracle ZFS Storage System offline?

  • Is hit ratio of Adaptive Replacement Cache (ARC) in the target storage system low?

  • Were many hits noticed in Directory Name Lookup Cache (DNLC) of the target storage system?

  • Were many hits noticed in Second Level Adaptive Replacement Cache (L2ARC) of the target storage system ?

  • Is the pool space over utilized by the target Oracle ZFS Storage System?

  • Is the memory over utilized by the target Oracle ZFS Storage System?

  • Were many major fault records noticed in the fault logs?

  • Were many major alert records noticed in the alert logs?

  • Is the Oracle ZFS Storage System hogging CPU resources?

  • Is the disk space over utilized by the target Oracle ZFS Storage System?

  • Were many errors/warnings noticed in the errors/warnings logs of target Oracle ZFS Storage System?

  • Is the hardware of the target storage system such as Disk, Fan, Power Supply Unit etc., healthy?

  • Is the target storage system rebooted?

Since the Network Layer have been elaborately discussed in Monitoring Cisco Router document, the sections to come will discuss the other layers in detail.
