Error Report Test

AIX provides comprehensive logging of events-some are errors requiring attention and others are just notifications. AIX offers different logs depending on the action and when it occurred. These logs hold information on the boot-up process, console, hardware and system software events. These errors are generally categorized in to three types Permanent, Temporary, and Informational. The errpt command generates an error report from entries in an error log. This test reads this error report generated and reports the number of errors of each type logged in the error log file. This way, administrators may identify the error type that is more critical and take remedial measures to rectify the same before any severe issue crops up!

Note:

This test reads an error report generated by running errpt command and reports measures. To enable the test to read the error report, the eG agent should possess read-only permission to the following files:

/var/adm/ras/errlog

/var/adm/ras/errtmplt

This test is disabled by default. To enable the test, go to the enable / disable tests page using the menu sequence : Agents -> Tests -> Enable/Disable, pick the desired Component type, set Performance as the Test type, choose the test from the DISABLED TESTS list, and click on the << button to move the test to the ENABLED TESTS list. Finally, click the Update button.

Target of the test: An AIX host

Agent executing the test: An internal agent

Output of the test: One set of results for each error type logged into the error log file of the target AIX server being monitored.

Configurable parameters for the test
Parameter Description

Test Period

How often should the test be executed

Host

The host for which the test is to be configured.

Detailed Diagnosis

To make diagnosis more efficient and accurate, the eG Enterprise embeds an optional detailed diagnostic capability. With this capability, the eG agents can be configured to run detailed, more elaborate tests as and when specific problems are detected. To enable the detailed diagnosis capability of this test for a particular server, choose the On option. To disable the capability, click on the Off option.

The option to selectively enable/disable the detailed diagnosis capability will be available only if the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • The eG manager license should allow the detailed diagnosis capability
  • Both the normal and abnormal frequencies configured for the detailed diagnosis measures should not be 0.
Measurements made by the test
Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation

Number of errors

Indicates the total number of errors of this type logged into the error log during the last measurement period.

Number

A non-zero value for this measure is a cause for concern.

The detailed diagnosis of this measure lists the label, time at which the error occurred, error type, resource name, description and detailed data relevant to the error.
