Arista Memory Utilization Test

This test monitors the memory utilization of the Arista Switch and proactively alerts administrators to potential memory contention, if any.

Target of the test : Arista Switch

Agent deploying the test : An external agent

Outputs of the test : One set of results for the target Arista Switch that is to be monitored.

Configurable parameters for the test
Parameter Description

Test period

How often should the test be executed

Host

The IP address of the Arista Switch that is being monitored.

SSH Port

Besides SNMP, this test also uses the Arista Switch CLI to pull metrics. To run the CLI commands, the test first needs to establish an SSH connection with the Arista Switch. To enable the test to establish this connection, specify the SSH Port here.

SSH Username, SSH Password, and Confirm Password

As stated earlier, this test also uses the Arista Switch CLI to pull metrics. To use the CLI, the test first needs to connect to the Arista Switch via SSH, and then run commands using CLI. For running the commands, this test requires the privileges of a valid SSH user with permission to run the CLI commands. Specify the user name and password of such a user against SSH UserName and SSH Password text boxes, and confirm the password by retyping it in the Confirm Password text box.

Timeout

Specify the duration (in seconds) within which the SNMP query executed by this test should time out in this text box. The default is 10 seconds.

Measurements made by the test
Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation

Total memory

Indicates the total amount of memory allocated to the target switch.

GB

Used memory

Indicates the amount of memory that was already utilized by the switch.

GB

A value close to the Total memory measure indicates that the memory resources are depleting rapidly.

Free memory

Indicates the amount of memory that is currently available for use.

GB

A sudden decrease in this value could indicate an unexpected/sporadic spike in the memory utilization of the switch. A consistent decrease however could indicate a gradual, yet steady erosion of memory resources, and is hence a cause for concern.

Buffered memory

Indicates the total amount of real or virtual memory allocated for use as memory buffers.

GB

Memory usage

Indicates the percentage of memory currently utilized by switch.

Percent

A value close to 100% indicates abnormal memory consumption by switch.
