Arista Temperature Sensor Test

Arista switch includes a number of internal temperature sensors which varies based on the model of the switch. Each sensor is assigned specific temperature thresholds for critical components of the switch such as CPU, fans, front external panel etc.

Temperature values that exceed the temperature threshold of the sensor trigger the following:

  • All fans run at maximum speed and a warning message is logged when the temperature exceeds Alert Threshold.

  • The component is shut down immediately and its Status LED flashes orange when the temperature of the critical component exceeds Critical Threshold .

In modular systems, cards are shut down when their temperature exceeds the critical threshold. The switch is shut down if the temperature remains above the critical threshold for three minutes.

A shut down of the switch is an expensive operation in mission-critical environments. Frequent shut down of the switch may lead to loss of business and reliability. To avert such adversities, it is essential to keep track on the temperature sensors and figure out the temperature sensors that are registering abnormal temperatures. The Arista Temperature Sensor test helps administrators in this regard!

This test monitors the temperature recorded by each temperature sensor of the target switch and alerts administrators to the exact hardware component (associated with the temperature sensor) that is faulty.

Target of the test : Arista Switch

Agent deploying the test : An external agent

Outputs of the test : One set of results for each temperature sensor of the target Arista Switch

Configurable parameters for the test
Parameter Description

Test period

How often should the test be executed

Host

The IP address of the Arista Switch that is being monitored.

SSH Port

Besides SNMP, this test also uses the Arista Switch CLI to pull metrics. To run the CLI commands, the test first needs to establish an SSH connection with the Arista Switch. To enable the test to establish this connection, specify the SSH Port here.

SSH Username, SSH Password, and Confirm Password

As stated earlier, this test also uses the Arista Switch CLI to pull metrics. To use the CLI, the test first needs to connect to the Arista Switch via SSH, and then run commands using CLI. For running the commands, this test requires the privileges of a valid SSH user with permission to run the CLI commands. Specify the user name and password of such a user against SSH UserName and SSH Password text boxes, and confirm the password by retyping it in the Confirm Password text box.

Timeout

Specify the duration (in seconds) within which the SNMP query executed by this test should time out in this text box. The default is 10 seconds.

Measurements made by the test
Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation

Temperature

Indicates the current temperature registered by this temperature sensor.

Celsius

An abnormally high temperature could be indicative of a faulty hardware component associated with the temperature sensor.
