Desktop Delivery Controller Connectivity Test

The Desktop Delivery Controller is the central management component of a site and is responsible for managing user access, brokering and optimizing connections. When a user submits credentials to the Citrix web site hosted on the Citrix StoreFront server, the credentials are verified directly to a Domain Controller, and the validation is passed over to the Desktop Delivery Controller to begin resource enumeration. The Desktop Delivery Controller then queries the site database for the Delivery Groups assigned to the user. The resources defined by the Delivery Groups are sent to the StoreFront server and presented to the user. Then, the user uses the allocated resources to start a desktop or application session.

This implies that the non-availability of the Desktop Delivery Controller can bring the resource enumeration process a halt! The users may no longer be able to access the resources and consequently, will be denied access to the business-critical applications/services! To avoid this, administrators must periodically check if the Desktop Delivery Controller is available and promptly detect its unavailability. This is exactly what the Desktop Delivery Controller Connectivity test does!

This test continuously monitors all the Desktop Delivery Controllers that are in communication with the target StoreFront server and promptly reports the availability of each Desktop Delivery Controller.

Target of the test: A Citrix StoreFront server

Agent deploying the test : An internal/remote agent

Outputs of the test : One set of results for each Desktop Delivery Controller that communicates with the Citrix Storefront server being monitored.

Configurable parameters for the test
Parameters Description

Test period

This indicates how often should the test be executed.

Host

The host for which the test is to be configured.

Port

The port number at which the specified HOST listens to. By default, this is 443.

Detailed Diagnosis

To make diagnosis more efficient and accurate, the eG Enterprise embeds an optional detailed diagnostic capability. With this capability, the eG agents can be configured to run detailed, more elaborate tests as and when specific problems are detected. To enable the detailed diagnosis capability of this test for a particular server, choose the On option. To disable the capability, click on the Off option.

The option to selectively enable/disable the detailed diagnosis capability will be available only if the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • The eG manager license should allow the detailed diagnosis capability
  • Both the normal and abnormal frequencies configured for the detailed diagnosis measures should not be 0.
Measurements made by the test
Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation

Availability

Indicates whether/not the Desktop Delivery Controller is available.

Percent

If the Desktop Delivery Controller is available, then this measure will report the value 100. The value 0 for this measure, indicates that the Desktop Delivery Controller is not available.

The detailed diagnosis of this measure reveals the name of the Desktop Delivery Controller, the XML and SSL relay port numbers, and type of a farm in which the Desktop Delivery Controller is deployed.
