Citrix Communications Test

In a Citrix environment, Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) installed on the Citrix Virtual Apps server enable the Virtual Apps server to register with Delivery Controller in the Control Plane. This in turn allows the server and the resources it is hosting to be made available to users. VDAs establish and manage the connection between the Virtual Apps server and the user device and enable users to connect to desktops and applications hosted on the target server. In the whole process, communication from the VDA to the Control Plane and Active Directory involve a majority of the processing time. Communication bottlenecks is one of the common reasons for poor connectivity, slowdowns and data loss on the target server. Frequent/prolonged breaks, imposed due to latencies, in communication may result in delays/failures in the delivery of critical data, thus impacting user experience and productivity. To ensure the speedy communication and better user experience, latencies in the tiers should be proactively spotted and resolved at the earliest. The Citrix Communications test helps administrators in this regard!

This test auto-discovers the tiers engaged in communication on the target Virtual Apps server and, for each tier, reports average and maximum latency reported during communication. In addition, this test also reveals the number of connections established for communication on each tier. This helps administrators to instantly know the connection load on each tier.

Target of the test : Citrix Virtual Apps Server

Agent deploying the test : An internal agent

Outputs of the test : One set of results for each tier on the Citrix Virtual Apps Server that is to be monitored.

Configurable parameters for the test
Parameters Description

Test Period

How often should the test be executed. By default, this is 5 minutes.

Host

The host for which the test is to be configured.

Port

Refers to the port used by the Citrix server. By default, it is 1494.

Detailed Diagnosis

To make diagnosis more efficient and accurate, the eG Enterprise embeds an optional detailed diagnostic capability. With this capability, the eG agents can be configured to run detailed, more elaborate tests as and when specific problems are detected. To enable the detailed diagnosis capability of this test for a particular server, choose the On option. To disable the capability, click on the Off option.

The option to selectively enable/disable the detailed diagnosis capability will be available only if the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • The eG manager license should allow the detailed diagnosis capability
  • Both the normal and abnormal frequencies configured for the detailed diagnosis measures should not be 0.
Measurements made by the test
Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation

Avg latency

Indicates the average latency of this tier.

Milliseconds

Max latency

Indicates the maximum latency reported on this tier.

Milliseconds

Comparing the value of this measure across the tiers will reveal the tier that experiences maximum latency.

Connections

Indicates the number of connections established in this tier.

Number

Compare the value of this measure across tiers will reveal the tier in which maximum number of connections are being established.
