Since the datafiles contain the user data and the data dictionary and represent a major component of the database, monitoring the activity on the different datafiles is critical for optimizing database performance. The tests pertaining to this layer helps administrators identify the level of activity that is happening on each datafile of a database. The results can be used to reorganize the data storage, so as to balance the activity across the different datafiles and among the different physical disks in use.
