eG Manager License Usage Test
eG Licenses governs overall functioning of the eG manager and eG agents. The license optionally enables or disables specific manager capabilities and imposes limits on the extent of monitoring that can be performed by the eG agents. eG Enterprise offers the following types of licenses:
-
Server-based licenses
-
OS Monitor
-
Virtualization monitor
-
Application Monitor
-
External Monitor
-
-
User/desktop-based licenses
-
Named user/desktop licensing
-
Concurrent user/desktop licensing
-
Periodically, administrators should track how licenses are utilized in the target environment, so as to optimize license usage and to plan for growth. This can be achieved using the eG Manager License Usage test!
This test monitors the usage of the types of server and user based licenses, and alerts administrators if the organization is fast running out of any license type. Based on these insights, administrators can determine which licenses are to be replenished quickly to ensure uninterrupted monitoring of the target environment.
This test reports the license type that is being utilized in the target environment and statistics related to license utilization. In the process, the test highlights the following:
- The total number of monitors allowed by the license type;
- The number of basic and premium monitors utilized in the environment;
- The number of servers, applications, services, segments and network devices monitored using the reported license type;
- The number of eG agents;
- The number of virtual desktop users allowed by each license type and the number of virtual desktop user licenses consumed and available for use;
- The number of O365 users/endpoint/thin client licenses allowed by each license type and the number of same licenses consumed and available for use;
- The number of days by which the licenses of each type will expire.
This test is disabled by default. To enable the test, go to the enable / disable tests page using the menu sequence : Agents -> Tests -> Enable/Disable, pick the desired Component type, set Performance as the Test type, choose the test from the disabled tests list, and click on the < button to move the test to the ENABLED TESTS list. Finally, click the Update button.
Target of the test : The eG Manager
Agent deploying the test : An internal/remote agent
Outputs of the test : One set of results for the eG manager being monitored.
Parameter | Description |
---|---|
Test period |
How often should the test be executed . |
Host |
The host for which the test is to be configured. |
Port |
The port number at which the specified host listens. |
JMX Remote Port |
Here, specify the port at which the JMX listens for requests from remote hosts. In the <EG_MANAGER_INSTALL_DIR>\manager directory (on Windows; on Unix, this will be the /opt/egurkha/manager directory) of the eG manager, you will find a management.properties file. Set the port defined against the com.sun.management.jmxremote.port parameter of the file as the JMX Remote Port. |
User, Password, and Confirm Password |
By default, JMX requires no authentication or security. Therefore, the User, Password , and Confirm Password parameters are set to none by default. |
JNDIName |
The JNDIName is a lookup name for connecting to the JMX connector. By default, this is jmxrmi. If you have registered the JMX connector in the RMI registry using a different lookup name, then you can change this default value to reflect the same. |
JMX Provider |
This test uses a JMX Provider to access the MBean attributes of the eG manager and collect metrics. Specify the package name of this JMX Provider here. By default, this is set to com.sun.jmx.remote.protocol. |
Timeout |
Specify the duration (in seconds) for which this test should wait for a response from the eG manager. If there is no response from the eG manager beyond the configured duration, the test will timeout. By default, this is set to 240 seconds. |
DD Frequency |
Refers to the frequency with which detailed diagnosis measures are to be generated for this test. The default is 1:1. This indicates that, by default, detailed measures will be generated every time this test runs, and also every time the test detects a problem. You can modify this frequency, if you so desire. Also, if you intend to disable the detailed diagnosis capability for this test, you can do so by specifying none against DD frequency. |
Detailed Diagnosis |
To make diagnosis more efficient and accurate, the eG Enterprise embeds an optional detailed diagnostic capability. With this capability, the eG agents can be configured to run detailed, more elaborate tests as and when specific problems are detected. To enable the detailed diagnosis capability of this test for a particular server, choose the On option. To disable the capability, click on the Off option. The option to selectively enable/disable the detailed diagnosis capability will be available only if the following conditions are fulfilled:

Measurement | Description | Measurement Unit | Interpretation | ||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
License type |
Indicates the type of the eG monitoring license. |
|
The values that this measure reports and the numeric values that correspond to them have been discussed in the table below:
Note: By default, this measure reports the Measure Values listed in the table above to indicate the license type of the manager. In the graph of this measure however, the same will be represented using the numeric equivalents only. |

Number |
A low value is preferred for this measure. |
||||||||
Total monitors available |
Indicates the number of eG monitors available for use. |
Number |
Ideally, a high value is preferred for this measure. |
||||||||
Premium monitors allowed |
Indicates the total number of premium monitors allowed by the license type. |
