Oracle ZFS FC Traffic Test

The Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance is an enterprise NAS storage solution with an advanced architecture that includes a highly intelligent symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) storage OS that takes full advantage of modern multi-core CPUs, enabling you to run multiple workloads and advanced data services without reducing performance. Its unique Hybrid Storage Pool (HSP) architecture automatically caches data on dynamic random access memory (DRAM) or flash cache to provide optimal performance and exceptional efficiency, while ensuring that data remains safely stored on persistent storage such as HDDs or SSDs.

Fibre Channel (FC) is a gigabit-speed networking technology used nearly exclusively as a transport for Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI). FC is one of several block protocols supported by the appliance; to share Logical Unit Number (LUNs) via FC, the appliance must be equipped with one or more optional FC cards.

This test monitors and reports the data transfer rate and the I/O transfer rate through Fiber channel between the Storage and LUN. Using this test, the administrator would be able to track the bandwidth usage between the storage and LUN.

Target of the test : Oracle ZFS Storage System

Agent deploying the test : A remote agent

Outputs of the test : One set of results for the Oracle ZFS Storage System being monitored.

Configurable parameters for the test
Parameter Description

Test period

How often should the test be executed.

Host

The IP address of the target system that is being monitored.

Port

The port number through which Oracle ZFS Storage System communicates. The default port is 215.

User, Password and Confirm Password

By default, this test uses the REST API commands to pull out the required metrics. To execute the REST API commands, the eG agent requires the permission of a local administrator user who has been assigned with Basic role and a custom role with Analytics authorization and read permission. Specify the credentials of such a user in the USERNAME and PASSWORD text boxes and confirm the Password by retyping it in the CONFIRM PASSWORD text box. To create a new user with the required permissions, refer Creating a new user on Oracle ZFS Storage System.

Timeout

Specify the time duration for which this test should wait for a response from the storage system in the TIMEOUT text box. By default, this is 60 seconds.

Measurements made by the test
Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation

FC bandwidth

Indicates the data transfer rate through Fiber channel between the Storage and LUN

MB/sec

A higher value denotes excessive bandwidth utilization by the fiber channel.

FC IOPS

Indicates the input and output rate through Fiber channel between the Storage and LUN

Operations/second

A sudden high value could indicate a processing bottleneck.

The gradual increase in the value of this measure indicates a consistent rise of I/O load on the component.
