SCVMM MAC Address Pools Test

VMM uses static MAC address pools to automatically generate and assign MAC address to VMs.

Administrators need to track the usage of these pools, so they can quickly identify pools that do not have enough MAC addresses for allocation to VMs. The SCVMM MAC Address Pools test helps administrators perform this usage tracking!

This test automatically discovers the MAC address pools that have been created in SCVMM. For each pool, the test reports the count of addresses that have already been allocated to VMs and the number that is available for allocation. This way, the test points to pools that have been over-utilized. Detailed diagnosis reveals the host groups to which the MAC addresses in a pool have been assigned.

Target of the test : SCVMM

Agent deploying the test : An internal agent

Outputs of the test : One set of the results for each MAC address pool

Configurable parameters for the test
Parameter Description

Test Period

How often should the test be executed.

Host

The IP address of the SCVMM server being monitored

Port

The port at which SCVMM listens. The default is 'null'.

Domain, Username, Password, and Confirm Password

The eG agent runs PowerShell scripts on SCVMM to pull metrics. To run these scripts, the eG agent requires the permission of an SCVMM administrator with 'read-only' privileges. In order to grant this permission to the eG agent, configure the Username and Password parameters of this test with the credentials of an SCVMM administrator with 'read-only' privileges. Confirm the password by retyping it in the Confirm Password text box. Then, specify the domain to which this user belongs against the Domain text box.

Detailed Diagnosis

To make diagnosis more efficient and accurate, the eG Enterprise embeds an optional detailed diagnostic capability. With this capability, the eG agents can be configured to run detailed, more elaborate tests as and when specific problems are detected. To enable the detailed diagnosis capability of this test for a particular server, choose the On option. To disable the capability, click on the Off option.

The option to selectively enable/disable the detailed diagnosis capability will be available only if the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • The eG manager license should allow the detailed diagnosis capability
  • Both the normal and abnormal frequencies configured for the detailed diagnosis measures should not be 0.
Measurements made by the test
Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation

Allocated addresses

Indicates the number of addresses that have been allocated from this pool and assigned to VMs.

Number

Available addresses

Indicates the number of addresses in this pool that are yet to be allocated/assigned.

Number

Unassigned addresses

Indicates the number of addresses that have been allocated from this pool, but have not yet been assigned to any VMs.

Number

Total addresses

Indicates the total number of addresses in this pool.

Number

Using the detailed diagnosis of this measure, you can know which host groups are associated with the pool.

Using the detailed diagnosis of the Total addresses measure, you can know which host groups are associated with the pool.
