HP 3PAR LUN Capacity Test

Each data layer in HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage system is created from elements from the previous layer. Chunklets are drawn from physical disks, Logical Disks (LDs) are created from groups of chunklets, Common Provisioning Groups (CPGs) are groups of LDs, and Virtual Volumes (VV) use storage space provided by the CPGs. Virtual volumes draw their resources from Common Provisioning Groups (CPG), and volumes are exported as logical unit numbers (LUN) to hosts. VVs are the only data layers visible to the hosts. There are several types of virtual volumes consisting of three separate data components, User space, snapshot space, and administration space. If the user space and snapshot space consume all available space, the copy-on-write operation of the LUN will fail. Hence, administrators have to increase the size of volumes, the amount of user space, and the amount of snapshot space for LUNs as the requirements increase. HP 3PAR LUN Capacity Test helps administrators for the same.

This test auto-discovers the LUNs in the Storage system and reports the size of the volume and the utilization of user space, snapshot space and administration space on each LUN. This test also reports the percentage utilization of user space and snap space. This way, administrators are forewarned to any potential space contention and thereby helps them to proactively increase the size of the volume and spaces before application performance is affected.

Target of the test : A HP 3PAR Storage system

Agent deploying the test : A remote agent

Outputs of the test :One set of results for each LUN on the HP 3PAR Storage system being monitored.

Configurable parameters for the test
Parameter Description

Test Period

How often should the test be executed.

Host

The IP address of the Storage system.

Port

The port number at which the Storage system listens. The default is NULL.

User and Password

By default, this test executes SSH commands on the target storage system to collect the required metrics. Specify the credentials of a user who has the right to execute SSH commands on the storage device and pull out metrics. To monitor the HP 3PAR Storage system,  you will have to provide the credential of a user who has been assigned the Browse role. To know how to create a user with Browser role, refer to How to Create a New User with Browser Role?

Confirm Password

Confirm the password by retyping it here.

SSH Port

The Secured Shell (SSH) port number at which the Storage system listens. The default is 22.

Jar

By default, this test uses the wbem.jar for metrics collection. This is why, the wbem option is selected by default. If you want the test to use the sblimCIMClient.jar for collecting metrics, choose the sblim option here.

Timeout (Seconds)

Specify the duration (in seconds) beyond which this test should time out in the Timeout text box. The default is 60 seconds.

Measurements made by the test
Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation

Volume size

Indicates the size of this LUN.

TB

Used size of snapshot admin

Indicates the amount of snapshot admin space used on this LUN.

TB

Administration space, or admin space, is the area of the volume that corresponds to LD regions in the CPG that track changes to the volume since the previous snapshot was created. The administration space contains pointers to copies of user data in the snapshot space. Administration space is managed by the system, not with the tools you use to manage user and snapshot space.

Used size of snap data

indicates the amount of snap space used on this LUN.

TB

Snapshot space, or copy space, is the area of the volume that corresponds to LD regions in the CPG that contain copies of user data that changed since the previous snapshot. The snapshot space contains the copy data.

Used percent of snap data

Indicates the percentage of snap space used on this LUN.

Percent

Used size of user data

Indicates the amount of user space used on this LUN.

TB

User space is the area of the volume that corresponds to the LD regions in the CPG that are available to the host. The user space contains the user data and is exported as a LUN to the host.

Used percent of user data

Indicates the percentage of user space used on this LUN.
